CHAPTER 18

FBI OFFICES, SEATTLE DIVISION

Nora sat in a cramped room full of monitors and mainframes with one of the Seattle division’s computer crimes experts, an overweight, undersocialized man in a shirt and tie named Gerald Hagney. They’d gone through all of Nora’s online accounts, everything from her banking to her subscription to Seventeen Magazine she had when she was thirteen. Nora clenched her teeth, feeling like she was being beaten at her own game.

“Is there any sign of where he is or who he is?” Nora asked, frustrated.

“No. Other than the IP address tied to the cabin in the woods under the name Raymond Jones, he seems to be using a remote proxy server to cloak his identity and whereabouts. That is what’s making it seem like he’s in the UK. In theory we might be able to detect where he was visiting the proxy server website from, but there are countless of them commonly used for a number of things, making it impossible to differentiate him from the rest of the traffic,” Hagney said in a low voice that forced Nora to lean in to hear.

With access to so many people’s accounts, there was a good chance he had access to just as many devices too. Options for pinning him down were growing thin, but an idea struck Nora that could flush him out. Staring at the screens, she tried to think it through. The last thing she could afford was another mistake.

“Should we go ahead and change your passwords then, delete some of these unused accounts?” Hagney went on mumbling. Nora pursed her lips.

“Is there any reason to think he knows we know he’s in my accounts?” Nora asked. Hagney coughed and adjusted his tie.

“It’s hard to say if he knows we’ve figured out why he wasn’t at the cabin when you arrived. But he did say he had deep access to you when he must’ve known you were in earshot. And with your background, he would have to know you’d figure out there was another user with access to your e-mail account eventually.”

“That’s true, but on the other hand he hasn’t tried sending any messages or making any noticeable moves from inside the account. He also thought it was worth ripping my information off of the wall in order to keep his access a secret. Even if he knows he has limited time before he’s thrown out, he wants as much information as he can get about what I’m doing. But why? Is it simply because he’s hoping for a chance to kill me?”

They stared at the screens for a moment, trying to put the pieces together. In just a flash, the account activity changed, registering another visit.

“Oh, there he is!”

“He’s checking the account,” Nora said, grabbing a jacket and moving toward the door. “There’s something he’s hoping to find out.”

Nora stalked out into the hall and took the stairs to Johnson’s office. It was risky approaching him with another long shot maneuver, but she knew it would work.
